How to Prepare Kids (and Parents) for Family Photos

The weather is getting nice, the kids are out of school, and now is the time we start thinking about getting family photos. Planning a family photography session can be time consuming.

You have to coordinate outfits, choose a location, and try to make sure everyone is in the photo taking mood. When little ones are included, it can feel like a perfect storm.

Luckily, I am here to assist and make this process easier.

Preparation and a calm mind will lead to a family photography session that is fun and relaxed, even with toddlers. Being a dad and family photographer, I know how to create a low-stress session where everyone can enjoy themselves. Let’s cover 7 tips to ensure your family session is full of lasting memories.

1. Set the Tone Early

Kids will respond to our emotions and act in kind. If you’re worried about the session or treating it like an overly important event, they will certainly act on those emotions. Prior to the session, talk about it like an adventure or fun family outing.

I have found telling the kids the day is about spending time together, playing games, and having fun will put them at ease. The more you can embody these ideas and remain relaxed, the more comfortable everyone will be during the session.

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

If your kids are anything like mine, their best moods happen when they are well rested and well fed. Knowing your kids natural rhythm will tell you the best time to schedule a photography session. I find these times to usually fall around mornings or early evenings.

Photographers tip: sunrise and sunset allows for the best light and will give your family photographs the golden glow effect.

3. Dress for Comfort (and Confidence)

Cute new outfits are fun to buy and probably look adorable, but for children to be happy, they have to be comfortable. It is best to avoid itchy fabrics, tight shoes, or anything too unfamiliar that might upset the kids.

Outfits that look good and allow for free movement are always safe bets. Backup outfits, especially for outdoor sessions, are a must. To assist you in the wardrobe decisions, I created a style guide with a few suggestions that look good in photographs.

4. Pack Smart: Snacks, Water, and Comfort Items

We learned early on with our youngest not to leave the house without a “snack bag”. Kids love their snacks and quickly become uncooperative when they are hungry, so bringing non-messy snacks is a great idea. Other items of importance are a water bottle and stuffed animal or other comfort item.

Familiar items can make children feel safe and comfortable during a photography session by bringing a part of home with you. These items also add a very memorable touch to the photographs that will be a cherished memory when the little ones are grown.

5. Embrace the Chaos

Unpredictably is not only okay, it is expected and often leads to amazing photographs.

Telling your family’s story starts with allowing kids to be themselves. The most beautiful and meaningful moments are created during these times. Think of your little one laughing, snuggling up to you, or expressing that characteristic glance you love. Allow me to guide the session in a way that feels natural and you will love the images that end up on your wall.

6. Parents: Relax and Be Present

Your job doing the photography session is to enjoy the family time and let the smiles and interactions flow naturally.

With the technical stuff handled by me, you are responsible for the family connections. Once you are relaxed and enjoying yourself, your little ones will follow and this leads to them opening up, playing, and engaging in the adventure. Your reward will be truly authentic photographs.

7. Trust Your Photographer

I will take the time to learn about your children, your family dynamics, and what makes you feel most comfortable. I will adjust and take a different approach depending on whether your child is shy or energetic and match the session to their energy.

Your family photography adventure is a team effort where the goal is to make it the best experience that is meaningful to your family. How you feel during the photography session will translate to how you see the photographs, so I want to make sure you love every moment.

Final Thoughts: This Is About More Than Just Photos

Family photography sessions are not about capturing the “perfect” pose, they are about capturing life’s fleeting moments. This means looking back and remembering how your children looked at you, their tiny hands in yours, or even your family laughing together without even realizing the camera is there.

Ready to capture those fleeting moments? Book a session!
